Football, etc. is Lindsay Minton (guitar/vocals) and Mercy Harper (Bass VI), who met while attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. After graduating in 2008, they relocated to Houston and formed football, etc. in 2009. The band released a split 7" with Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) on Count Your Lucky Stars Records before putting out The Draft in 2011.
Originally released in March 2011, The Draft arrived near the leading edge of what would become known as the emo revival. Recorded live over a few days in Norman, Oklahoma with engineer Trent Bell, the album captured guitarist/vocalist Lindsay Minton, bassist Mercy Harper, and drummer James Vehslage tracking together with minimal overdubs, sleeping in the studio between sessions. The result was a ten-song debut that balanced angular guitar work, shimmering melodies, and raw, emotionally direct songwriting. The record–and especially the track “Safety,” has continued to find new listeners in the years since its release.
